Redwoods to Sea

The Redwoods to Sea Initiative is a successful project, a vision put to life, where endangered wildlife can roam free and rare biological linkages and ecosystems remain intact. Through community action, the acquisition of 3,800 acres (owned and threatened by lumber companies), was secured for generations to come and connectivity between 55,000 acres of old growth redwood forest and 60,000 acres of the Kings Range National Conservation Area and the sands of the Pacific Ocean.

For close to three decades the Middle Mattole Conservancy and Friends of Gilham Butte worked to protect this strategic biological linkage. They built a coalition of local organizations which included Save the Redwoods League and Ancient Forests International.

Lost Coast League members are continuing to pursue efforts to conserve additional land and build an even greater corridor that links the redwoods to the sea; in which animals and fog can roam free under a healthy and regenerating canopy of trees. When our current efforts to save Rainbow Ridge prevail, we will soon link 18,000 more acres to this area of high conservation valued forest.
